There is one piece of advice I share with every expecting mom who contacts my studio.
Don’t wait until your baby arrives to think about newborn photos.
Those first few weeks are beautiful, exhausting, emotional, and wonderfully fleeting. They pass so quickly that most parents don’t realize how much has changed until they’re already looking back.
As a Phoenix newborn photographer, I’ve had the privilege of photographing hundreds of growing families over the years. If I could sit down with every expecting mother in Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Glendale, and Peoria over coffee, these are the things I would want her to know before her baby arrives.
The ideal time for a newborn session is when your baby is between 7 and 14 days old.
During this short window, babies naturally sleep more deeply, stay comfortably curled into the poses they loved inside the womb, and are generally easier to soothe. That allows me to create the timeless newborn portraits so many parents fall in love with.
After those first two weeks, babies begin stretching out, becoming more alert, and spending longer periods awake. They’re discovering the world around them, which is wonderful—but it also means creating those sleepy, curled-up newborn photos becomes much more challenging.
Because this window is so short, I always recommend reserving your newborn photography Phoenix session during your second trimester or early in your third. We schedule around your due date and adjust once your little one arrives.
This is the conversation I have with almost every new mom.
“I haven’t lost the baby weight.”
“I’m exhausted.”
“My hair isn’t done.”
“I just don’t feel like myself.”
I understand every one of those feelings.
But years from now, your child won’t see any of the things you’re worried about.
They won’t notice the sleepless nights written across your face or the changes your body went through to bring them into the world.
They’ll see their mother.
They’ll see the way you held them. The way you looked at them. The way they fit perfectly in your arms.
Those motherhood photos aren’t really for today. They’re for the little baby who will someday become an adult looking back at where their story began.
As someone who specializes in motherhood photography Phoenix, I can tell you that these images often become the most treasured portraits a family owns.
One day they’re sleeping on your chest.
Then they’re smiling.
Crawling.
Running through the house.
Before you know it, you’re packing lunches and watching them walk into school carrying a backpack that’s almost bigger than they are.
Time has a funny way of speeding up once you become a parent.
Photographs are one of the few things that allow us to stop it, even if only for a moment.
When families come back to my studio for milestone sessions years later, they almost always tell me the same thing:
“I can’t believe she was ever that tiny.”
That’s exactly why I believe baby’s first photos matter so much.
Many parents arrive worried that their baby won’t sleep or will cry the entire time.
Please don’t carry that stress.
Newborns cry. They need to eat. They need diaper changes. Sometimes they simply want to be held.
That’s completely normal.
An experienced Phoenix baby photographer builds plenty of time into every session for feeding, cuddling, and comforting your little one. We always move at your baby’s pace—not the clock.
Some of my favorite portraits happen after a feeding break or while mom is quietly soothing her baby.
There is no such thing as a “perfect” newborn.
Many parents initially tell me they only want photographs of the baby.
I gently encourage them to reconsider.
Your newborn didn’t arrive into the world alone.
These first family portraits become part of your family’s history. Whether it’s dad holding his newborn daughter, grandparents meeting their newest grandchild, or older siblings proudly standing beside the baby, those relationships deserve to be documented.
One day your child will treasure those photographs just as much as the solo newborn portraits.
When you’re searching for a Scottsdale newborn photographer or someone specializing in maternity and newborn photography, it’s easy to focus on beautiful images.
Beautiful work matters.
But experience matters even more.
Newborn safety, soothing techniques, posing, lighting, and knowing how to work patiently with babies all come with years of education and practice.
Your baby’s comfort and safety should always come first.
Every decision I make during a session is centered around creating beautiful artwork while protecting the newest member of your family.
When you’re in the middle of newborn life, it can feel like the days will never end.
Then somehow they do.
The tiny fingers grow bigger.
The newborn stretches disappear.
The little noises fade into memories.
That’s why I believe investing in newborn photography Phoenix isn’t simply about decorating your home.
It’s about preserving the beginning of your family’s story.
