For our family, that passion has always been soccer.

For as long as I can remember, soccer has been woven into our family’s story. My husband’s love for the game began with his father, and over the years that passion has been passed down to our son. Soccer isn’t simply a sport in our home—it is part of our family culture.

If we’re not watching a match on television, we’re attending one. Conversations about professional players, legendary clubs, famous stadiums, and now the upcoming World Cup somehow find their way into breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It’s the language our family speaks.

As a professional sports photographer in Phoenix, Arizona, I spend my days preserving meaningful moments for families. Yet recently, I was reminded why documenting our own children’s passions is just as important.

More Than a Sport: The Power of Childhood Passions

Watching our children discover something they truly love is one of the greatest gifts of parenthood.

As parents, we aren’t simply watching them play a sport, dance a routine, ride a horse, or perform music. We’re witnessing confidence develop. We’re watching discipline, perseverance, and determination take shape.

My son has become fascinated by the world of soccer. He can tell you about clubs throughout Europe and Latin America. He follows players from around the globe and has even shown interest in learning different languages so he can understand songs, chants, and traditions associated with the sport.

His dreams seem bigger every year.

With the World Cup coming to the United States, the excitement in our household has reached an entirely new level. Every conversation somehow circles back to soccer.

And that’s exactly why I knew I wanted to create something special for him.

Why I Brought My Son Into the Studio

As a Phoenix sports photographer, I spend countless hours creating portraits for athletes throughout Scottsdale, Chandler, Gilbert, Tempe, Mesa, Glendale, Peoria, and surrounding communities.

But photographing my own child felt different.

What started as a fun creative studio session quickly became one of my favorite portrait experiences ever.

He arrived ready to show me every move he had practiced. He posed like the professional player he hopes to become one day. He juggled the ball, practiced celebrations, and showed off his personality in a way I rarely get to see in front of the camera.

The funny part?

My son usually doesn’t enjoy being photographed.

Like many children, getting him in front of my camera often requires some negotiation. But this time there were no bribes, no convincing, and no complaints.

Because he wasn’t posing.

He was simply being himself.

And that’s when I realized these images weren’t really about soccer at all.

The Portraits That Matter Most

As I photographed him under the studio lights, I found myself thinking about the future.

One day these portraits will remind me of the boy who spent hours in the backyard practicing with a soccer ball at his feet.

The boy who believed anything was possible.

The boy who dreamed of playing on the world’s biggest stages.

The boy who still runs to tell me about his favorite players and the latest match he watched.

These portraits already have a permanent place on my wall.

Not because he plays soccer.

But because this is who he is right now.

And that version of him won’t last forever.

As parents, we often think we will remember every detail. The interests, the hobbies, the dreams, the excitement. But time has a way of moving much faster than we expect.

Before we know it, childhood evolves.

Interests grow.
